Do you think he really is their biggest fan?

Last night I was talking to somebody who supposedly LOVED Pink Floyd. However, everything he said about them made me think that he only knows 1 or 2 songs at best. He started talking about Another Brick In The Wall (of course), and I asked him which was his favorite...part 1, 2 or 3. He said part 1, but then started reciting the lyrics to part 2. He then got the words wrong....according to him it's "No dark sarcasm at the crossroads."

What do you think when people do stuff like this? Do you think they really are huge fans? What about when people misspell the names of the bands (i.e. Lynard Skynard, Lead Zeppelin, Jimmy Hendricks Experience)? I mean, I don't expect anybody to tell me Jim Morrison's birth date or where he grew up...I mean, if you can that is fantastic but I don't think it's necessary to be a fan of the music. But, there are some simple things that you would expect fans to know...like how to spell the band's name.

Some of us, however, DO enjoy he bands we advertise. I change my name occasionally to reflect whatever band I am currently addicted to. I don't claim to be any band's biggest fan. I can't name off every song Pink Floyd made. I've never been to a concert. I'm trying to say that we can't say someone is a "Fake Rocker" just because they want people to know what they like.

Before I answer, I would like to say- it wasn't me she was talking to. Anyway,

No, I don't think they are huge fans. They are the guys who your stuck in a car with, an awesome rock song comes on, and they sing- at the top of their lungs, no less-horribly. They screw up the lyrics, they get the timing wrong, and when you try to correct them, they act like YOU'RE the dumbass. You show them concrete proof, but they still doubt you.
They do, however, see rock as something that it is- greatness. They want what we have. They want to be true fans, but they are simply unable to. And some of them, I'm sure, do it just to look cool.

Some, however, just might be making a simple mistake. I think back on times I have said something idiotic, and wonder, "How the heck could I have said that?"

Rock on.

Edit- I don't believe there is a certain criteria for being a "fan." You are or you aren't. All I believe is, like zippythejessi said, they should be able to carry on an inteligent conversation. I don't necessarily believe they should have to write an essay interpreting the song or anything, but they should be able to come out with more than-

Me: So what do you think about Pink Floyd?
Other Person: OMG I LIKE TOTALLY LOVE THEM!!
Me: Why?
Other Person: OMG BECAUSE THEY'RE LIKE THE BEST BAND EVER!
Me: Why do you say that?
Other Person: OMG BECAUSE THEY'RE LIKE AWESOME!

They should know some basic stuff. Like someone earlier said, a true fan of Pink Floyd should know something about the Barret era. If they can't name any albums besides DSOTM, they probably aren't a true fan.
